I have experienced these assessments with my mother, they ask you to pick up an empty box and move it from one table to another (the tables are immediately next to each other) and if you can, they mark you as fit for work. It’s likely that our guy received the same assessment and probably did manage to move the box, but for any person with common sense, this should not be a defining factor in a person’s capability for work.
It is hard to understand why there is one assessment for all disabilities, and this is something that must be looked at by the current government. Yes, we need to reduce the deficit, but at what expense? The dignity of disabled people? It is a difference between life and death for some, reducing benefits on a disabled person will certainly place them into poverty and contradicts current legislation, the Disability Discrimination Act and the Equality Act.
