Social media negatively affects education

Social media negatively affects education, as well as social skills and human connection. More specifically, social media limits the amount of face to face communication people have. An article “The impact of social media use on social skills” explains, “Teenagers, between the ages of 12-17, report using text messages in their daily lives more than any other form of communication, including face-to-face interaction” (Lenhart). consequently, there is a fade of feelings and connections between people is lost. Moreover, the importance of learning non-verbal communication skills is extreme and social media is disrupting that. The more understanding of non-verbal cues can result in positive relationships. Mark L. Knapp states, “Understanding the non-verbal aspects of communication is crucial because social situations we need to modify our behavior in response to the reactions of others” (Knapp & Hall). Additionally, social media can improve and strengthen relationships, but it can also ruin them. When people communicate over social media, they can send out and receive mixed signals.
