There are a few areas in childcare and education where only one approach is correct. Being able to evaluate your performance means considering other possibilities and approaches, even if they are unfamiliar. To do this, we need to understand the value systems and experiences that have shaped our work practices. The way we were treated and educated as children may have an impact, for example, how we deal with children’s behavior, meal times, or settling in. Similarly, if you work in only one type of environment, the experience so far allows you to see only one way to work with your child, so you may not be aware or not comfortable with the other methods. This means we can visit other places and talk to other practitioners so that we can expand our vision of how to work with children and avoid being narrrow-minded.
